Squirt A News 2004-2005
Sunday, March 6, 2005 - NTXHL Championships
Alliance Squirt A Season Ends in NTXHL Playoffs
Squirt A - Stars 5, Alliance 1: The Bulldogs came in with high hopes for their final game of the season, but could not make them pay off in Game 4 of the NTXHL Playoffs in Farmers Branch on Sunday morning. The Alliance boys finished the season with 2 strong games in the opening rounds of the NTXHL Playoffs and hope to remember those efforts as they begin their off-season and planning for next year.
Squirt A - Ice Jets 7, Alliance 2: The Ice Jets came loaded and were too much for the Bulldogs to handle in Game 3 of the NTXHL Playoffs in Farmers Branch on Saturday night. Hoping to ride some of the momentum from their fine efforts against the top 2 teams in the league on Friday night and Saturday morning, the Bulldogs were unable to capture the momentum and fell out of contention with the loss. They hope to come back strong in their final game on Sunday morning against the Dallas Jr. Stars.

Squirt A - DMHA Titans 3, Alliance 2: There was very little rest for the Bulldogs as they got back in action early Saturday morning against the DMHA Titans in Game 2 of the NTXHL Playoffs in Farmers Branch. Both teams came to play in the second round and it was a great game of hockey for all those who were there. Both teams came out full force in the first period with no sign of fatigue from their first round games. The 1st period ended tied 0-0 in a very even matched period of hockey.
Neither team let up in the second period, but the Titans tried to take the momentum with an even strength goal at the 11:37 mark for a 1-0 lead. They appeared to have swung the tide by scoring their second goal just 1 minute 44 seconds later to extend the lead to 2-0. Just when the Titans thought they had collared the Bulldogs, the leash broke and the Dogs scored an even strength goal of their own 19 seconds later for a 2-1 game. The Bulldogs kept up the heat, and with 38 seconds left in the second period, Alliance scored once again and closed out the second with the score tied 2-2.
Neither team could
get the upper hand in the third, with defense
controlling the flow of the game.
With 1:23 left in the game, the Titans found a crack
in the Bulldogs defense for a quick rebound
and the puck landed in the back of the Alliance net
for a 3-2 Titan lead. The Dogs
controlled the center ice face off, pulled their
goalie, but were unable to to score before the
final horn sounded. The Bulldogs return to the
ice tonight at 7:15 to face the Ice Jets in
the third round of the playoffs. Friday, March 4, 2005
Squirt A - LS Wolves 2, Alliance 1: The Alliance Bulldogs faced off against the 1st Place Lone Star Wolves in the opening game of the NTXHL Playoffs in Farmers Branch Friday night. The Wolves came out to play and caught the Dogs on the heals of their skates. The Alliance opponent scored on a power play goal at 6:18 remaining in the 1st period to take the 1-0 lead. The first period was all Wolves but they were only able to come away with a 1-0 lead at the end of one.
The Dogs took advantage of the break between periods to gather team spirit, and came out with an attitude any Bulldog would be proud of. The second period was classic playoff hockey with both teams mounting aggressive offensive assaults only to be turned away by relentless defense. The second period ended as it started, with the score still 1-0.
The third period
found the Dogs down a man for the first 1:20,
but their penalty kill prevailed and the Wolves
could not convert. As the penalty expired,
there was a flurry of activity in front of the net,
and as fate would have it, the Dogs got called for a
body check protecting their goalie. The
Bulldogs again went on the penalty kill, and the 2
minutes passed again with an empty net behind the
Alliance goalie. The Wolves found a way to
break through the Alliance defense at 3:50 of the
third for an even strength goal and took a 2-0
lead. At 2:18 remaining, Alliance
again went on the penalty kill after clearing a few
pesky Wolves from in front of the Alliance goalie
and getting called for roughing. When
the penalty box door opened the Dogs went on the
offensive and with 0.1 seconds remaining the
Bulldogs found the back of the Wolves net to
avoid the shutout. Time was not on the
Bulldogs side, and the game ended 2-1 with
the Bulldogs wishing for one last chance at the
Wolves goalie. The Alliance Bulldogs are
back in action Saturday morning at 8:00 am against
the second place DMHA Titans. Sunday, February 20, 2005
Squirt A - Alliance 3, Cooksville 2: Game 3 of the Oak Ridge Classic Tournament for the Bulldogs was a classic Canadian hockey game. When the puck dropped, the Cooksville Phantoms came out hitting. The coaches looked at the refs and they said "Hey, it's hockey". The Bulldogs got the nod from their coaches and from then on all the Phantoms could say was "Who let the dogs out".
The Phantoms got on the board first with an even strength goal at 5:59 of the first for a 1-0 lead. The defenses then took over and the 1st period ended with a 1-0 lead for Cooksville. The Dogs controlled the pace of the second period and scored an even strength goal at 8:49 to tie the score at 1-1. The remainder of the second period was good hockey, and as the refs said at the drop of the first puck "Hey, it's hockey" and they held true to their word and let the kids play. The second period ended tied 1-1.
The
third period started out fast paced, and the Phantoms got another
even strength goal at 8:52 for a 2-1 lead. The Dogs got an
attitude that the Phantoms did not have an answer for, and scored 18
seconds later with an even strength goal of their own at 8:34 to
tie the score at 2-2. The Bulldogs were relentless
and got the go ahead goal for their first lead at 3-2 with 5:52
remaining in the game. The Bulldogs wanted to be sure
our northern neighbors remembered the boys from Texas, so the
Bulldogs turned up the heat, and controlled the remainder of the
game with a combination of puck control and solid defense. The
final horn sounded and the Bulldogs won 3-2. Saturday, February 19, 2005
Squirt A - Alliance 3, Guelph Storm 1: The Bulldogs met new friends again on Saturday morning during Game 2 of the Oak Ridge Classic Tournament, the Guelph Storm from just west of Toronto. Again the Bulldogs faced a strong opponent and the first period ended scoreless. The intensity carried over to the second period and the Storm got on the board first with a power play goal at 6:40 for the initial lead of 1-0.
The Dogs got the break they needed on a power play, and answered 36 seconds later to tie the score at 1-1 with 6:04 remaining in the 2nd frame. Both teams rose to the challenge and the 2nd period ended tied 1-1. The third period was all Bulldogs with a combination of great passing and strong defense. Alliance once again converted a power play for another score at 9:31 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs continued to pressure the Guelph team, and at 3:34 got an even strength goal for a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs took the win home by closing the period out with a strong defensive effort after the Storm pulled their goalie.
Friday, February 18, 2005
The first period of hockey was like a first date, with the Texas team getting to know the Host Canadian team, the boys from Oak Ridge. The Dogs scored first at 3:36 on an even strength goal to take the early lead at 1-0. It did not take long for the host team from Oakridge to answer at 2:26 with an even strength goal of their own. Overall a good period of hockey as new friends got to know each other and the period ended tied 1-1.
Period 2 caught the Dogs getting comfortable with their new friends, and the Oakridge team got a breakaway at 8:50 and scored another even strength goal to take their first lead at 2-1. The Dogs were relentless and even had a few close calls, but the post was not their friend tonight. Oakridge caught a break, as a player was coming out of the penalty box to lead a 2 on 1 attack, and scored with just 28 seconds remaining in the second period to make it 3-1 at the end of 2 periods of play.
The third period could have gone either teams way. There was back and forth hockey with equal scoring chances and tough defense until 1:28 remaining when the home team advantage came into play. The Dogs were pressing when the Oakridge team got a 2 on 0 breakaway to extend the lead to 4-1. The home team managed to slip a final goal with only 3 seconds remaining. The puck dropped at center ice, but the Dogs could not convert and time expired with the final score 5-1. The Bulldogs are back in action at 8:30 in the morning against the Guelph Storm.

Squirt A - Storm 6, Alliance 3: Dogs came out a little cool on this warm Texas night and never warmed up enough to win this NTXHL game. The Storm jumped to a 1-0 lead just 2 minutes and 25 seconds into the first period on an even strength goal. The Bulldogs and Storm battled head to head until the 50 second mark when a short handed goal got past the Alliance defense and the period ended 2-0 in favor of the Storm.
The second period had good competitive hockey but the puck would not cooperate for the Bulldogs, with the Storm scoring an even strength goal at 7:02, followed by a power play goal at 5:42. When it looked like an all Storm scoring fest, the Bulldogs got an attitude and converted on a power play for a score at 1:42. The second period ended with the Dogs trailing 4-1 but on the attack.
The third period started out all Dogs with a 4 on 4 score at 8:34, quickly followed by a power play goal at 7:44 to make it a tight game at 4-3. The Bulldogs were relentless but just could not get another puck into the net. The Storm managed to get a goal past the Alliance defense at the 2:45 mark for a 5-3 lead. Alliance worked hard and found themselves with a face off in the Storm zone, and pulled the goalie with just over a minute left.
When the puck dropped, it ended up on the tape of a Storm player's stick and found it's way into an empty Alliance net at 45 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs mounted an all out attack for the last seconds of the game, but were unable to score and the final horn sounded with the Bulldogs dropping their next to last NTXHL game 6-3.
The Squirts are off to Canada and London, Ontario on Thursday for some well deserved fun, and to play in the Oak Ridge Classic Tournament, which includes 11 Canadian teams in the Atom bracket.
Saturday, February 12, 2005
Squirt A - Ice Jets 6, Alliance 2: After battling to a 0-0 tie at the end of the 1st period, the Ice Jets would eventually capture the momentum in this NTXHL contest at Valley Ranch on Saturday morning. The Bulldogs trailed 3-1 after 2 periods of play, but never quit playing hard, fighting the Ice Jets all the way to the finish.
The Bulldogs came out in the first period with momentum to face an Ice Jet team equally fired up. The first period was a showcase for good aggressive Texas style hockey. Both teams had power play chances, and there was even 4 on 4, but neither team was able to crack the others defense. The 1st period ended 0-0 and neither team was able to capture the momentum for themselves.
The Jets scored first in the 2nd with an even strength goal at the 11:03 mark and attempted to steal the momentum. The Dogs would have no part of it, and answered 1:21 later for the 1-1 tie at 9:41. A penalty gave the Jets a man advantage opportunity and they capitalized with a power play goal to re-take the lead 2-1 at 4:02. This was a momentum boost for the Jets and they scored their third goal even strength at 2:14 to end the period with a 3-1 lead.
The Dogs were caught napping at the beginning of
the third period and the Jets scored two quick 4 on 4
goals at 9:42 and 24 seconds later at 9:18 to make it
5-1. The Dogs would not lay down and
fought back for the next score at 4:19 at even
strength to make it 5-2. The Jets managed to
slip one last goal into the net with 41 seconds left a 4
on 4 situation. Time expired and the
Bulldogs dropped their last
NTXHL game
with the Jets with the final score 6-2. The Dogs are
back in action on Monday night for their next to last
NTXHL game
against the Storm. Saturday, February 5, 2005
Squirt A - Alliance 3, Stars 2: There was a delayed start to this NTXHL game at Valley Ranch due to a broken glass. After several unsuccessful attempts to repair the glass, the Bantam Jr. Stars were kind enough to trade rinks, and the game got underway. The Stars came out hot and scored an even strength goal at 10:55 on a rebound off a shot from the blue line. They would increase their lead on the man advantage just a couple of minutes later, but the Bulldogs played like their mascot name and fought back in this contest.
The Stars again struck 43 seconds into a power play at 8:18 to increase their lead to 2-0. The Dogs got an attitude and a rebound of their own as a power play ended for a score at 5:12 to cut the lead to 2-1 Stars. The Bulldogs kept up the heat and ended the period with another man advantage goal at 16.6 seconds remaining in the 1st period to even the score at 2 all.
The 2nd period was good back and forth hockey, with each team's defense responding to every offensive challenge. Good fun hockey continued into the third period with the score still tied 2-2. The Bulldog's persistence paid off when a shot from between the circles rebounded onto a hungry Bulldog's stick and immediately found the back of the net. The Dogs put up a stone wall when the Stars pulled their goalie with just over a minute left and took a well played hockey game to the bank with a 3-2 win.

Squirt A - Ice Jets 7, Alliance 1: In a tough ending to a tough weekend, the Bulldogs dropped this one at Valley Ranch on Sunday afternoon. They fell behind just over 2 minutes into the 1st period and it was downhill from there, trailing at the end of one period 4-0, and at the end of two periods 7-0. The Bulldogs finished with a win of the 3rd period by holding the Jets scoreless and ruining their shut-out bid with a late goal in the final frame. They have 2 more NTXHL games to recover the momentum before they head off to London, Ontario, Canada for the 2005 Oakridge Classic February 18th through 20th.
Squirt A - DMHA 4, Alliance 1: In their second tough test of the weekend, the Bulldogs went up against league leading DMHA Sunday morning at Addison Square Garden. The Titans wasted no time, as they went on the power play 33 seconds into the game, and 1 minute later had a 5 on 3 for 49 seconds.
The 'Dogs were able to kill off the penalties, but DMHA scored an even strength goal at 5:34 on a dribbler from the corner. The Titans added another tally at the 1:34 mark to make the score 2-0 at the end of the 1st period, with the shots on goal DMHA 5 and Bulldogs 4.
The second period was better hockey with an even period of play for both teams. Each team scored an even strength goal, with the Bulldogs finding the back of the net at 1:54 on a rebound, followed by DMHA at 47.3 seconds remaining on a similar type rebound. Score at the end of 2 periods of play was 3-1 Titans, with Alliance out-shooting the Titans during the period by a margin of 7 to 6.
The third period was all DMHA. Alliance started with a man in the box with a penalty called as time ran out in the 2nd period. The Bulldogs were short 8 minutes of the period on 4 penalties, but were able to kill them off. DMHA scored their final goal at 10:45 for the only score of the third period.

Squirt A - LS Wolves 8, Alliance 1: The Alliance Squirt team started their 3-game weekend on a down note, again facing one of the better teams in the Squirt Division of the NTXHL, this time at Polar Ice in Grapevine very early Saturday morning. Facing a tough opponent already is challenge enough, but putting them on the power play too often proved to be too much to overcome as the Bulldogs fell behind early and could never muster any momentum in this one.
Sunday, January 23, 2005
Squirt A - Alliance 1, DMHA 1: The Alliance Squirt team finished their weekend, once again facing one of the top 2 teams in the Squirt Division of the NTXHL, this time it was the DMHA Titans in Valley Ranch. The Bulldogs came out feisty in the first period scoring first early in the game to take the 1-0 lead at the 12:11 mark. The shots on goal were even in the 1st period at 6 to 6, but Alliance carried the lead into the 2nd frame.
In the second period, DMHA grabbed the momentum, and controlled play for the most part by out-shooting the Bulldogs 12 to 1. The Titans eventually broke through the Alliance defensive wall and scored midway in the second at 8:46 to even it back up at 1-1. Going into the third period, DMHA was attacking with vigor early and continued to press the Bulldogs with shots, eventually ending the period with 24 shots on goal.
Alliance played tough, though, and in the last third of the period fought the Titans even, ending up with 10 shots of their own on goal. Despite being outshot 42 to 17, the score remained tied at 1-1 throughout, as the Alliance goaltending was tremendous. There were not a lot of penalties, as there were only 3 powerplay chances total, and none were converted, with both scores being at even strength.
The Bulldogs will have plenty of more NTXHL action again next weekend with 3 more games - another one against the Titans, and then against the Lone Star Wolves and the Ice Jets.
Saturday, January 22, 2005
Squirt A - Storm 5, Alliance 1: The Alliance Squirt team started their weekend against one of the top 2 teams in the Squirt Division of the NTXHL, facing the Dallas Storm on Saturday in Valley Ranch. Starting late, without a scoreboard, and sporting a new 3rd look with dark socks and light sweaters, the Bulldogs were looking good in the 1st period. But then things went crazy in the last minute of the 1st when the score changed 3 times in the span of 49 seconds.
With the game appearing to go into the 2nd period knotted at 0-0, the Storm created a scramble in front of the Alliance net and collected a rebound to put in for the 1-0 lead at :54 remaining in the period. The Bulldogs responded quickly though, as they capitalized on a rush up ice just 24 seconds later to tie it back up at 1-1. Once again, the Storm refused to let the period end without a lead, and took it for good with only :04 seconds left on a nice move that created a breakaway just inside the blueline for a 2-1 lead.
The Storm added a couple of insurance tallies in the 2nd frame, both goals again less than 90 seconds apart to make the lead 4-1 going into the final period. The Bulldogs continued to battle, and had several chances, but allowed a final goal on a 3 on 1, with the rebound going to make the final score 5-1. Alliance comes right back against the DMHA Titans early Sunday morning at 7:30 in Valley Ranch.

The Squirt A team took advantage of some extra time this past weekend and had one of those experiences that parents talk about when they say Travel Hockey is worth the investment.
Not sure how the game turned out, but I'm sure it didn't matter. To see more pictures from this fun time, click HERE.
Sunday, January 16, 2005
Squirt A - Northern Colorado 4, Alliance 1: The Bulldogs ran into a tough Grizzlies team, and had their tournament ended on Sunday. It was a good outing for Alliance though, as they went 2-2 on the trip, and they will use their extra time on Monday for some fun in Colorado, including some pond hockey like we don't see here in Texas.
Squirt A - Alliance 4, Littleton 1: The Squirt A team played one of their best games thus far, and raced past the Hawks of Littleton in this tough division of the Arvada MLK Holiday Tournament. Using timely goal scoring and another excellent net-minding effort, the Bulldogs ran their record to 2-1 in Colorado.
Saturday, January 15, 2005
Squirt A - Hyland Hills 3, Alliance 2: Alliance took an early lead and held it for the 1st period, but couldn’t hang on and dropped a close one to the Jaguars of Hyland Hills, Colorado in the 2nd Round of the Arvada MLK Holiday Tournament. The Squirts ran into a much bigger and very physical team, but made it a game by battling for every puck and playing hard the entire game. The Jaguars pulled the score even to 2-2 at the end of the 2nd period, and won the game with the only goal of the 3rd period. There was plenty of good goaltending flying around out there, as every goal was earned, and many denied.
Squirt A - Alliance 5, Denver 2: The Squirts were ready to go in their first tournament away from the friendly confines of the DFW area, as they ventured into the cold of the Rocky Mountains and Arvada, Colorado near Denver. They showed the local boys a thing or two, and came away with an impressive win in the 1st Round of the Arvada MLK Holiday Tournament. The Denver Pioneers discovered the Bulldog in Alliance, and paid the price, as they trailed the Texans 1-0 at the end of the 1st period. Denver pulled even at 2-2 at the end of the 2nd period, but the Bulldogs took the lead on a shorthanded goal to start the 3rd period, added another goal shortly thereafter, and then iced the game with an empty-netter.
Thursday, January 6, 2005 The Squirt A game against the Dallas Storm that was originally scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed and will scheduled for a later date. They, as well as the PeeWee AA, Bantam AA, and Bantam AAA teams, will practice this weekend in preparation for their upcoming tournaments during the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend.
Thursday, December 30, 2004 Squirt A - Added a practice for this Sunday, January 2nd from 11:15 am to 12:30 pm at Valley Ranch, see schedule.
Tuesday, December 28, 2004 Squirt A - Ice Jets 4, Alliance 0: Alliance would see a repeat of the earlier morning contest, as they struggled to get scoring chances in their final game of the International Silver Sticks Regional in Frisco Tuesday evening. The Jets will take the No. 3 Seed into the Semi-Finals against the Jr. Stars on Wednesday by way of their win over the Bulldogs.
Squirt A - Storm 4, Alliance 0: The Bulldogs ran into a "Storm" in this 3rd round game of the International Silver Sticks Regional in Frisco Tuesday morning. Playing against AAA competition was not something the Bulldogs are used to, but they gave it everything they had and kept it competitive throughout. The Storm would take the No. 1 Seed into the Semi-Finals against the DMHA Titans on Wednesday as a result of the victory.
Monday, December 27, 2004 Squirt A - Stars 2, Alliance 0: The Bulldogs faced off against the Stars for the 9th time this season, and despite 6 power play opportunities, was unable to crack the Stars defense or goalie and dropped this 2nd round game of the International Silver Sticks Regional in Farmer's Branch.
Alliance played the bigger Stars very even throughout the 1st period, but trailed 1-0 at the end of the period as a result of a 2 on 1 conversion by the Stars at 6:46. With the shots at only 3 per team after the first period, the action would heat up in the 2nd, helped along by a number of penalties and power play opportunities. Both teams would get 2 chances with the man advantage, but the Stars would convert on one of theirs, as they scored a 5 on 3 goal to take a 2-0 lead with only 1:22 left in the period. The Stars controlled the 2nd period as a result of the Alliance penalties, and won the shot battle of the period 10-4.
The 3rd period provided the best opportunity for the Bulldogs to crack the Stars net, as they had 4 chances on the power play during the period. It appeared that they had actually scored a goal to make it 2-1, but after a conference of the officials, it was determined that there was no goal. Alliance would provide tremendous pressure with mad scrambles in front of the Stars goal, but it was to no avail on this night. Although they out-shot the Stars during the period 13 to 2, the Stars hung on for the tough 2nd round win.
The Bulldogs will be busy again on Tuesday, as they start early with an 8:15 am tilt in Frisco against the very tough Dallas Storm, who is 2 and 1 thus far in the tournament, and then again at 8:15 pm against the Ice Jets in Plano.
Sunday, December 26, 2004
Squirt A - Alliance 4, DMHA 4 The Bulldogs faced off against DMHA for the 4th time this season, but this time it was not in NTXHL regular season play, but in the high profile International Silver Sticks Regional in Plano. The Titans came out strong and scored 2 quick goals, but couldn't hold the 'Dogs down for the win. The game settled down and was 4-2 for DMHA until the Dogs came alive. After getting that 3rd goal to make it a 1 shot game, the Bulldogs got their chance to tie it on the power play late in the 3rd period. With just 2:25 left in the game and only :27 left on the man advantage, Alliance tied the score on a nice wrist shot from the high slot. Bulldog goaltending was excellent, as they avoided defeat at the hands of the league leading Titans for the first time this season. It's back to action again Monday in the 2nd Round, as Alliance will face the Stars Select in Farmer's Branch at 4:45. The Stars are in the middle of the pack in NTXHL play, with an even 6-6 record. It will be the 8th meeting of the season for these familiar foes, with the Bulldog's lone victory coming back on November 21st when they surprised the Stars 2-1. Sunday, December 19, 2004 Squirt A - Alliance 4, Wolves 4: The Squirt A Team came out strong, looking for an upset of the Lone Star Wolves in a Squirt Gold Division North Texas Hockey League contest at Valley Ranch on Sunday. The Bulldogs recovered from their loss on Saturday by scoring 3 goals in the 1st period and it looked like they might just pull it off. The Wolves would have nothing of the upset idea though, and came back strong to make it another tie for these two clubs, both coming the last 2 weekends. The Squirts take their 12-14-2 record into the Christmas break, and will see plenty of action next week in the International Silver Sticks Regional in Plano December 26-30th. Saturday, December 18, 2004 Squirt A - DMHA 4, Alliance 1: The Alliance Bulldogs Squirt A team took on the top team in the Squirt Gold Division of the NTXHL Saturday, and found out why the Titans are leading the pack as the 'Dogs dropped this one at Valley Ranch. The Bulldogs cannot afford to wonder about this game, as they pick up the league action again on Sunday, facing the tough Lone Star Wolves. The Wolves are battling their way to the top of the division, but Alliance gave them something to think about last week when they fought to a 2-2 tie. The game is in Valley Ranch at 12:45 pm.
Saturday, December 11, 2004 Squirt A - Alliance 2, Wolves 2: The Squirt A Team went to battle against the Division leading Lone Star Wolves in a North Texas Hockey League contest at Polar Ice in Grapevine on Saturday, and they took the Wolves to task in a tough 2-2 tie. The Bulldogs sent notice that they may still make some noise in the Squirt Gold Division, and took their records to 2-6-1 in league play, and to 12-13-1 overall for the season The Bulldogs will be in more NTXHL action next weekend when they take on the DMHA Titans on Saturday, and have a rematch with the Wolves on Sunday. Both games will be at Valley Ranch. Friday, December 10, 2004 This weekend Squirt A Team is playing against the Lone Star Wolves in a North Texas Hockey League contest on Saturday, and they look to even their season record to the .500 mark, as they currently stand at 12-13-0. The game is at the Polar Ice rink at the Grapevine Mills Mall in Grapevine, and bring the coffee, it starts at 7:25 AM! The Wolves lead the Squirt Gold Division of the NTXHL with 5 wins and 2 losses thus far into the season.
